Temporary portable accommodation hire

When you need somewhere to live, on your land and on your terms, a Wheely Cabin is the fastest option. Delivered fully fitted, ready in days, and picked up when you're done.

Wheely Cabin set up on blocks as temporary portable accommodation

Temporary portable accommodation hire sounds niche. In practice, the need comes up all the time. House destroyed by fire. Renovation dragging into its fifth month. Build that won't finish. Elderly parent who needs to be close. We've seen all of it. And we've got a straightforward answer for all of it.

What makes it “portable”?

Our cabins are built on a chassis with road-legal wheels and a towbar. They roll to your site on a truck and get set up within a day. At the end of your hire, they roll away the same way. Your property looks exactly as it did before.

Because they're wheel-mounted, they fall under caravan legislation rather than building regulations. Under the NSW State Environmental Planning Policy (Housing) 2021, placement of a caravan on a residential property is classified as Exempt Development. No DA. No council permit. In most zones, you just don't need them. That's a serious practical advantage over transportable buildings or a granny flat build.

Long term caravan hire — but better

“Long term caravan hire” usually makes people think of a cramped, musty van. A Wheely Cabin is a different product entirely. Our single-bedroom cabins are over 20 square metres internally, with a full bathroom, kitchenette, reverse-cycle air conditioning, and proper insulation. Our double-bedroom models are bigger again.

We're not a holiday park. Minimum term is six months, and we rent by the week. If you need somewhere to actually live for six to eighteen months, we're probably the right fit. For NSW-specific delivery and legislation, check our long term caravan hire NSW page.

Situations we regularly help with

  • Insurance repairs. After a fire, flood, or major structural event, NSW planning rules let you place a caravan on your own land while repairs happen. The Insurance Council of Australia recorded over 30 declared catastrophe events in Australia in the past five years. Stay on your land. Stay sane. See our guide: hiring a portable cabin in flood-affected areas.
  • House builds running over. The Housing Industry Association reports build timelines have blown out by six months or more on average. A cabin on your block costs less than a rental and keeps you close to the site.
  • Major renovations. Australian spending on residential alterations hit $3.7 billion in late 2025 (ABS). Kitchen out, bathroom gutted, family at their limit. Move them into the cabin and get on with it. See also: renovation respite — staying on-site during your build.
  • Dual-generation living. Elderly parents who need to be close but not underfoot. Adult children moving back home who need their own space. The cabin solves both.
  • Rural and agricultural properties. Seasonal worker accommodation, caretaker quarters, or extra capacity when you need it, without building anything permanent.

What does it cost?

Hire is billed weekly. You pay a refundable bond and a once-off delivery and pickup fee upfront. After that, it's a flat weekly rate. No surprises. Maintenance is on us. Your rental agreement sets it all out before you sign a thing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need council approval?

No, in most cases. The NSW SEPP (Housing) 2021 classifies caravan placement as Exempt Development. No DA, no permits, in most residential zones. Check our FAQs if you want the specifics for your council.

What utilities does a cabin connect to?

Your existing water supply, a waste point, and a standard 15-amp power outlet. Our team handles all connections on delivery day.

How quickly can you deliver?

Usually one to two weeks from approval, subject to availability. Most installs are done in a single day.

Is a caravan allowed during insurance repairs?

Yes. NSW planning rules permit a caravan on residential land during approved repair works without a separate DA.
